West Ballina has some of the best real estate on the North Coast. If you want water views with easy access to the river for your boat or kayak, then this is the ideal place to raise your family or spend your retirement. A house by the river is many peoples idea of a dream home.
Unfortunately, the dream of entertaining by the water sounds great, but in reality it has its challenges. The hot sun in summer can get you running for cover, and the cold winter winds can mean an early end to your afternoon drinks. These factors also pale in comparison to the problem of biting insects such as mosquitos and midges. The beautiful Richmond River is a biting insect paradise.
Our clients in West Ballina had a single skin patio cover over their alfresco area which they could not use to enjoy the water views they had invested in. This was due to all the problems we just mentioned. In addition to this, because the patio was so open it was susceptible to the strength of the breeze. In summer and winter, the wind can be unbearably strong off the water, blowing things over and drowning the conversation.

The existing patio cover was open to the breeze and elements. It also didnt match up with the eaves of the house and made the area feel small and dark.
The clients needed something done so they contacted Geoff, our design consultant. Geoff visited their home and went through each issue to enable our clients to utilize the alfresco area to its full extent.
He recommended an insulated patio roof which would decrease the heat and cold coming from the roof instantly.
They discussed whether the roof would be skillion or gable. The clients didn’t like the look of the existing patio as the roof was not level with the house eaves. They decided the gable roof would take away the uneven look of the area and make the alfresco area bigger.
Addressing the breeze and biting insects Geoff gave the client’s 2 options:
- All Seasons vinyl panels to enclose the room.
- A glass enclosed room.
Both these enclosures would consist of sliding panels to allow access and fixed panels. Midge mesh sliding and fixed doors would be installed to stop the biting insects. As the All Season room is not classified as an inhabitable room, Council approval would not be required. Perspex would be used under the gable roof to complete the enclosed area.
After looking at the All Seasons room display at our Ballina showroom, our clients decided that this was the perfect solution.
Using aluminium posts and colour bond beams, gutters and flashings finished off the new look.
Our clients were extremely pleased with their new alfresco area saying:
“We can’t believe how much bigger the room looks. We will be able to use this room all year”

The fantastic view is not compromised. The sliding panels can shut to protect from the breeze, or opened to allow for cool area to flow.
