It has been a HOT summer! Even now, in late season, the afternoon sun can burn right until the moment it drops below the horizon.

That is one of the problems with patio areas on the North Coast. They are cool and shady in the middle of the day, but if you want to enjoy a refreshment after work you will most likely be staring into the hot sun.

No matter how good your patio roof is, at some point in the day you will need some vertical shade solutions.

This Ferngrove, Ballina house is the perfect example of a west facing house that is too hot to use in the late afternoons, just as you are trying to relax after a long day.

That was the very problem our customer in Ferngrove West Ballina was facing. They had a beautiful backyard, but the afternoon sun blazed in from the west. The sun was hot as you can imagine, but the glare from the neighbourhood roofs also made sitting in the patio area uncomfortable.

The existing patio was a great structure and after our Atlas consultants assessed the site, they recommended installing Side Channel Fabric Awnings.

The side channel awnings installed provide filtered light and cool shade to make the alfresco area more comfortable.

The X Channel awnings would provide the sun protection needed and would suit the decor of the house. The brick rendered pillars provided a perfect edge for the side channels, but Atlas can install this type of patio blind on any straight, flat surface.

The side channels attached to the rendered brick guide the bottom rail, but also neatly conceal the sides of the fabric blind.

Our customer also decided to upgrade the blinds by choosing a motorised option. The blinds are installed with a crank handle standard, but our client decided that controlling the height of the blinds while in the comfort of his chair sounded appealing.

The motorised patio blinds could be raised or lowered at the press of a button. This will come in handy when trying to catch some extra breeze in summer, or let in that nice warm sun in winter.

Overall, it was a good result, with the sun blocked and the hours spent in the alfresco areas extended.

If you think your backyard area could use a vertical shade solution liek this, contact Atlas Awnings today.
