Our client in Palm Lakes Ballina had a similar issue to a lot of our coastal residents. After being couped up for the last few months, the warmer weather encourages us to venture outside and enjoy the fresh air. We think about using the barbeque and entertaining but as soon as we do, the two biggest dampeners on spring barbeques strike – storms and insects.

A lot of houses are built similar to this, with a cosy courtyard open to the fresh air and sunshine. Not only do they suffer from rain and insects, but it can get to a point in summer when the rays of the sun are unbearable. As nice as an open courtyard seems, it is often impractical.

That is why our clients call Atlas Awnings. We offer practical and affordable solutions to some of the most common outdoor patio problems. After a consultation, we decided to build a screen room for the patio including a flat roof and aluminium security door.

Alfresco area, open to rain and hot weather

The before shot shows how the open patio area was often unusable due to the rain. The patio furniture was often covered for long periods without being used.

Stopping the rain

First step was to create a water-resistant Skillion patio roof. The insulated roof panelling was fixed to the existing house and channelled water into the new Colourbond guttering. The Colourbond guttering was chosen to match the existing décor, thus minimising the visual jarring. Atlas Awnings will always do the very best to make sure the renovation fits the original theme of the house.

Stopping the heat

The insulated panelling has a couple of important advantages. One is the smooth finish of the underside matches most existing ceiling materials, helping to emulate the clean lines of an indoor ceiling.

The other important advantage is the insulating properties of the roof panels. A hot summer sun will radiate straight through a single skin roof, but insulated patio panels will help keep the area cool in the hotter weather.

Stopping the insects

Anywhere outside on the North Coast in the warmer months will have problems with insects, but the estates around the estuarine waters of Ballina suffer more than most. This little patio area was protected from insects by midgy mesh screening from roof to flooring.

The completed screen room for the patio, complete with permanent outdoor furniture

The final screen enclosure has created a cool and airy outdoor room, able to be used in most conditions. The insulated roof panels create a finish that look and feel like an extension of the living area.

Long Lasting Aluminium

The posts and beams were constructed from white glossy aluminium. Lightweight, resistant to corrosion, and easy to match to an existing colour scheme, aluminium is a smart choice for most patio areas.

Security Door for Access

Finally, a white security door was installed for access to and from the new room. Safe and stylish, aluminium doors are an easy way to add a door that matches the renovation.

Relax in style and comfort

The final product gave our clients a safe, secure, private area to relax and enjoy the outdoors. They will get much more enjoyment out of the patio knowing they are protected from rain, hot sun and biting insects. We wish them many years of pleasure in their new screen enclosure.
