So you have decided to upgrade your patio area? Don’t know where to start? This guide to patio roofs will give you an idea of whats available and inspire you to make the move towards your dream patio area.

The North Coast is renowned for its great weather, so it makes sense to be outdoors as much as possible.

Once you have planned out the spot you want to improve, the next step is to decide on the type of protection you want. There are a lot of options available, but the most common solutions to extend your living space and usable area is with a fixed patio roof.

A patio roof provides strong, permanent protection from the sun and weather, allowing you to relax outdoors more regularly and for longer periods of the year. The roof that Atlas Awnings can construct come in a few different varieties, all with their benefits. Our design consultants can help you make the most informed choice, but hopefully this guide can give you a basic idea of what might work in your situation.

In this article, we will take a look at the first and most simple type of roof, the Flat or Skillion Roof style.

Flat/SKILLION ROOF

A flat or skillion roof is a single sloped roof that is an extension of the existing roof line. It is often flat or slightly sloped to give you the maximum height available in your patio area. Some of the features are:

Low visual impact

The skillion roof is usually an extension of the existing roof design, so it complements your existing home style. A lot of customers want the extension to look like a part of the original home, so a skillion patio roof is perfect for this.

Most cost effective option

Because the skillion roof is just a single roof construction, is is often the cheapest way to expand outdoor living area or carport area.

Range of colours to suit your existing home

One of the main goals of the customer is to extend without the new addition looking like an extension, so it is important that the materials are available in a range of colours and styles.

Can be designed with fewer posts

As the roof is often attached to the existing structure, it is possible to design the roof with fewer posts, reducing costs and maintaining an open feel to the space.

Can be free standing or attached to Home

The skillion roof is often attached to the existing house, but it can be designed as a free-standing structure. A separate carport, a backyard gazebo, or a pool house are all examples of this.

Protection and value

All of our Atlas Awnings Patio roofs will help protect your assets from sun, wind rain. Safely leave outdoor furniture, barbeques and outdoor equipment and avoid weather damage. The extra space will also add value to your home, either for yourself or potential buyers.
